The path to a better future for Indigenous youth and ultimately Indigenous communities is education. Indigenous students that choose to pursue a business diploma or degree may not have the same support system and network that other students enjoy. Employers in Alberta have a keen interest in attracting Indigenous students; however, there is a gap between the current culture of the workplace and ensuring business is truly an open and inviting place where Indigenous students and graduates can thrive.
New Buffalo Education Circle
The Circle’s Purpose
Provide a support system and advocate for post-secondary Indigenous students to help them achieve their goals.
Inform the community and post-secondary schools on Indigenous ways of knowing as they engage students in a reciprocal and meaningful manner.
Provide organizations with access to talented Indigenous students.
Who is leading the NBEC?
We have a cross-industry Board looking to jumpstart this non-profit organization by hiring an Executive Director and raising six months of operating funds.
Board members are: Sarah Bidniak, Liz Herbert, Joseph Jobin, Ruby Littlechild, Aroon Sequeira, and Errol Wilson.
The NBEC intends to focus this initiative initially on business programs and students as there is significant interest and demand in Indigenous business students at this time. However, as the organization grows, it will broaden its scope to other under-represented areas of study such as STEM.
